Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua says that he will serve as the campaign director for the United Opposition if he does not secure the coalition’s presidential ticket for the 2027 General Election.
Speaking to a Wiper Party delegation during a consultative meeting at his Wamunyoro home on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) leader vowed to steer the opposition movement to a decisive victory against the incumbent Kenya Kwanza administration.
Gachagua highlighted his political acumen, describing himself as a seasoned strategist in high-stakes national contests. He added that President William Ruto understands his campaign strengths and views him as a formidable competitor.
“If I will not be the opposition’s flag bearer, I will be the director of the presidential campaigns,” Gachagua announced.
Confidence ran high throughout his address, with the DCP chief insisting that a fully mobilized opposition campaign will leave the ruling party struggling to keep pace on the trail. He maintained that once the coalition hits full stride, President Ruto will be left “gasping for air”.
Urging unity across the political spectrum, the former deputy president reiterated that presenting a single, strong presidential candidate remains the coalition’s surest path to winning the 2027 ballot.
During the same gathering, Gachagua raised stakes further by addressing the death of late Emurua Dikirr Member of Parliament Johanna Ng’eno, who died in a helicopter crash in the Mosop area on February 28, 2026, while traveling from West Pokot. Gachagua stated that he intends to visit the late lawmaker’s mother to share his perspective on the incident prior to hosting public rallies in the constituency on August 21, 2026.
“Nitaenda kwa mama Johanna Ng’eno nimuambie vile kijana yake aliuliwa; kama Ruto anataka kutupiga akuje tumezoea,” Gachagua declared.
Gachagua has repeatedly challenged official accounts of the crash, alleging that the late MP’s death was a deliberate act rather than an accident.
