Elvis Opiyo, the prime suspect in the March 2026 acid attack on Mary Claire Ochieng, has died at his rented apartment at Amani Court in Umoja Two, Nairobi. Police are treating the death as a suspected suicide after a post-mortem examination determined that he had ingested poison.
Opiyo’s death came just two days after he traveled back to Nairobi from his rural home to answer a summons from his employer, the National Intelligence Service (NIS).
How the body was found
Investigators found Opiyo lying on his back with no visible external injuries. An empty white plastic cup containing traces of an unidentified substance sat beside his body. A nearby wooden table held a spoon and a white chemical wrapped in clear nylon, which police suspect was the poison he used. They recovered no suicide note from the scene.
Opiyo’s wife grew concerned when he stopped answering his phone and alerted a friend, who went to the apartment and discovered the body. The friend reported the matter at the Umoja Two Patrol Base at 11:00 p.m. under O.B. Number 13/11/08/2026, after an initial alert had gone out at 4:00 p.m.
NIS summons and dismissal
According to a relative and a close friend who requested anonymity, the NIS issued Opiyo a dismissal letter over the acid attack case after he honored the summons. Opiyo called his wife afterward to tell her that his employer had terminated his service. Investigators later recovered the termination letter near his body.
Pathologists carried out the post-mortem examination on Wednesday.
Opiyo remained the prime suspect in the acid attack on Ochieng at the time of his death, and no conviction had been secured in the case.
Prior to his suspension, Opiyo worked as a driver for the NIS and sang at Lighthouse Ministries, where he first established a connection with Mary Claire Ochieng. He had been out on bail while facing trial at the Kibera Law Courts.
While Opiyo’s death formally closes the criminal proceedings against him, prosecutors continue to pursue cases against his alleged accomplices. On Monday, a Kibera court ordered co-suspect Jared Olang Gang to remain in custody for four additional days. Nairobi authorities confirmed that detectives are still actively investigating the broader network behind the attack.
