The Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) has criticized Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi for using increased soft drink consumption as a benchmark for Kenya’s economic stability.
Speaking at the party’s headquarters on Thursday, August 13, DCP Secretary-General designate Senator John Methu dismissed the minister’s reasoning as meaningless, demanding that the government present genuine evidence showing that President William Ruto’s administration is improving citizens’ lives.
“Stop giving us speeches and infertile arguments that more Kenyans are taking soda and therefore, the economy is good. Kenyans don’t eat speeches; they want money in their pockets,” stated the Nyandarua Senator.
Methu outlined a clear checklist of metrics that would signal true economic recovery for the average citizen.
“Don’t just tell Kenyans that the economy has grown. Tell us, are Kenyans saving more? Are they keeping more of their salaries after tax? Are businesses making more money? Are farmers earning from their produce? Are youths finding jobs? Are fewer families borrowing merely to survive?” he asked.
The senator also defended former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua following attacks from lawmakers aligned with President Ruto over his recent ‘Ruto at Four’ address. Methu insisted that Gachagua’s statement was not a partisan attack but a necessary audit representing 55 million Kenyans demanding accountability from the president.
Reaffirming Gachagua’s stance, Methu called for immediate answers regarding state abductions, the harassment of journalists, the forced removal of foreign nationals, and the killing of Gen Z protesters.
The opposition party issued its statement shortly after Mbadi claimed that critics of the administration were driven by ethnic motives rather than economic realities. Defending the government’s track record, the Treasury chief argued that rising consumer spending pointed directly to improving financial conditions.
“If it’s the economy, we should be celebrated, and some of us should be given awards. Soft drink consumption has gone up in this country; do you know what that tells you? People take sodas when there is a little more in their pockets,” Mbadi stated.
