Nairobi Senator and Linda Mwananchi leader Edwin Sifuna hit back at claims alleging that former President Uhuru Kenyatta funds the opposition against President William Ruto’s administration.
Sharing a clip from an interview Ruto gave to the Daily Nation, Sifuna mocked the President’s response after an interviewer asked for concrete proof regarding Uhuru’s alleged role.
“Yule jamaa amebeba akili yote ya Kenya aliulizwa swali mboga sana, atoe evidence Uhuru ndio sponsor ya upinzani, akasema hata yeye alisoma kwa gazeti…na anadai sisi ndio mafala,” Sifuna said.
Ruto and his political allies routinely accuse Uhuru of bankrolling opposition figures, specifically singling out Edwin Sifuna and Jubilee presidential candidate Fred Matiang’i. Both figures are actively mounting political challenges against Ruto ahead of the upcoming general election.
When pressed during the interview to back up those claims with evidence, Ruto pointed the reporter back to a previous headline printed by the newspaper itself. That article reported that Uhuru convened a “super alliance” to challenge Kenya Kwanza.
“You work for the Nation, right? Can you check the Sunday Nation headline of August 2? What was the headline? It says, ‘Uhuru super coalition against Ruto.’ You answered yourselves. Despite everything he did, I won the elections,” Ruto replied.
Meanwhile, former President Uhuru Kenyatta made a light-hearted remark regarding persistent claims that he sponsors the Linda Mwananchi movement.
The comment came after supporters erupted in loud cheers when Kenyatta mentioned Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna during the 23rd memorial service for former Vice President Michael Kijana Wamalwa in Kitale, Trans Nzoia County.
While listing various political figures, Kenyatta reminded voters that citizens ultimately decide who leads Kenya following the 2027 general election. He noted that voters remain free to choose any candidate they prefer.
However, the crowd broke into cheers and ululations the moment Kenyatta named Sifuna, prompting the former head of state to caution the audience against fanning political rumors.
“Jameni chungeni, sitaki kuitwa sponsor,” Uhuru said, drawing laughter from attendees.
The exchange brought a lighter moment to the memorial event, where leaders from across the political divide gathered to honor the late vice president’s legacy, while Kenyatta reminded the audience that voters hold final authority at the ballot box
