Nyandarua Governor Kiarie Badilisha, who won his seat on a United Democratic Alliance (UDA) ticket, has defected to the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP). Party leader Rigathi Gachagua and designated Secretary General Senator John Methu formally received the county chief on Wednesday, July 29, during a consultative forum at Gachagua’s Wamunyoro residence.
Explaining his departure from the ruling party, Badilisha noted that he simply followed the clear directives of his constituents, adding that he will seek re-election on a DCP ticket.
“I am here, and I am not turning back because the people of Nyandarua have spoken and spoken loudly,” Governor Badilishe stated.
Gachagua welcomed the governor alongside the Nyandarua County Assembly into the outfit, offering assurances that DCP will conduct transparent and fair nominations.
“The people of Nyandarua County, led by their governor, have brought a message of goodwill from the people of Nyandarua County; they are answering the call for the liberation of Kenya. To them, the future is green. The mass exodus from unpopular parties, notably the infamous UDA, continues,” he stated.
The former deputy president framed the Green Party as the political vehicle of choice across Mount Kenya, asserting that clinching the party’s nomination ticket practically guarantees victory in the general election.
“We, the people of the Mountain, have decided that the election will be decided in the nomination, which will be held in March. Between now and then, the people of Nyandarua, help your governor because if he gets the DCP ticket, I will do the rest, but you must do your bit,” Gachagua added.
Earlier in the day, Gachagua also welcomed 24 sitting Members of County Assembly from Laikipia and Nakuru counties who abandoned UDA and the Service Party (TSP) led by former Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Mwangi Kiunjuri to join DCP at his Wamunyoro home.
Badilisha becomes the second governor from the region to join DCP, coming shortly after Murang’a Governor Irungu Kang’ata officially announced his move from President William Ruto’s camp to Gachagua’s party.
Concluding his remarks, the former DP cautioned state operatives against persecuting county bosses who walk away from the ruling coalition, while hinting that Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi may soon follow suit.
