Kenya Scores Big as PS Mary Muthoni Takes Key Africa Health Leadership Seat | BossNana International Radio

Kenya has secured a pivotal seat at the table of continental health policy following the election of Mary Muthoni, the Principal Secretary for Public Health and Professional Standards, as the chairperson of the African Permanent and Principal Secretaries for Health.

This election represents a significant personal achievement for Muthoni and a strategic victory for Kenya. It places the nation at the forefront of shaping Africa’s health agenda during a critical era where the continent seeks to build self-reliant systems in the face of dwindling external funding.

A Unified Vision for Health Security

Delegates confirmed Muthoni’s new role during a high-level consultative meeting on cross-border collaboration for health security in Brazzaville. The forum highlighted an increasing momentum toward a unified African response to public health challenges, moving away from fragmented national strategies toward coordinated continental action.

Permanent and Principal Secretaries for Health act as the engine rooms of their respective ministries. As chief administrative and accounting officers, these officials drive national policy implementation, oversee critical health budgets, lead flagship programs like Universal Health Coverage (UHC), AND manage disease prevention and cross-border health security initiatives.

In her acceptance speech, Muthoni framed her election not just as a win for Kenya but as a mandate for deeper cooperation across African borders.

“I am deeply honoured by the trust placed in me, which reflects our shared commitment as African nations to strengthen cooperation across health sectors, enhance coordinated responses to cross-border health threats, and build resilient, future-ready health systems through collective leadership and strategic partnerships,” she said.

Strategic Gains for Kenya

Muthoni pointed out that Kenya stands to benefit immensely from this leadership position. The role offers a platform to sharpen coordination in disease surveillance and response while drawing on a pool of shared expertise and innovation from across the continent.

By leading this body, Kenya can better align regional engagement with its national goals, ensuring that local health systems benefit from continental best practices.

“It also elevates the country’s role in shaping continental health priorities, mobilizing partnerships, and accelerating progress towards Universal Health Coverage while safeguarding the health of our communities,” she noted.

As Muthoni takes the helm, the focus shifts to how this new collective leadership will navigate the complex landscape of post-pandemic recovery and the pursuit of health equity for all Africans.
