The Directorate of Criminal Investigations has connected the gang behind the May 3 murder of Reverend Julius Ndumia Ngari at PCEA Tabuga Church to a broader pattern of violent crime stretching across Nakuru County.
In a formal briefing on May 12, investigators identified the group as a dangerous criminal outfit with a long history of armed robberies, one that has been on the DCI’s radar since at least 2022.
The gang’s preferred method is calculated and brazen: its members disguise themselves as security officers before carrying out attacks on unsuspecting victims.
A Pattern of Violence Dating Back Years
The DCI’s latest findings connect the gang not only to the clergyman’s killing but also to a violent robbery that took place just two days earlier, on May 1. In that incident, the attackers forced a victim to transfer Ksh600,000 from their bank account into mobile numbers linked to gang members, a detail that gave investigators a traceable financial thread to pull.
Forensic analysis and intelligence work ultimately led detectives back to a group they first formally profiled nearly four years ago.
“Through sustained forensic and intelligence-driven investigations, detectives have firmly linked the incident to a notorious criminal gang first profiled in July 2022,” the DCI statement read.
The gang’s profile includes the use of an L1A1 rifle, a high-powered firearm that detectives recovered during a separate operation in 2024. That recovery now takes on added significance as investigators piece together the full scope of the group’s activities across the county.
Multiple Attacks Now Under the Microscope
The DCI is not treating these incidents as isolated events. Specialized investigators are now examining several other violent attacks and robberies in Nakuru County and its surrounding areas to determine how many can be pinned to the same gang.
“Detectives are also investigating a pattern of violent attacks and robberies within Nakuru County and its environs. It is suspected that the same gang is behind several of these incidents,” the directorate confirmed.
Detectives have since arrested two suspects in connection with Reverend Ngari’s murder. The arrests came alongside the recovery of valuables that investigators confirmed belonged to the slain clergyman.
The DCI says it is actively building a comprehensive case to ensure all those responsible face the full weight of the law and that its approach remains thorough and impartial throughout the process.
As the investigation continues to develop, the DCI has called on Kenyans to exercise patience and resist the temptation to speculate about the circumstances surrounding Reverend Ngari’s death.
“We urge members of the public to remain calm, avoid speculation, and continue cooperating with investigators by providing any relevant information,” the directorate stated.
