Saboti MP Caleb Amisi recently disclosed a private conversation with the late former prime minister Raila Odinga, claiming he received personal authorization to openly challenge the Kenya Kwanza administration. During an interview with Radio Maisha, Amisi recounted a secret meeting in Kileleshwa where he sought guidance on his political stance following a shift in sentiment within his constituency.
Amisi explained that he felt compelled to speak out because his supporters in Saboti had voiced strong opposition to the government’s policies. Seeking his party leader’s counsel, the lawmaker shared his intention to break rank and offer public criticism. According to Amisi, Odinga encouraged his independence, noting that the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) maintains its identity as an opposition party.
“Mine was a secret with him. I met former Prime Minister Raila Odinga in Kileleshwa; we sat together, and I told him that my people have refused to support President William Ruto. Allow me to criticise the government. Raila told me to go ahead; ODM is not in government. I can quote him,” Amisi stated.
Beyond his stance on the government, Caleb Amisi identified himself as the founder of the Linda Mwananchi movement. Working alongside Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, Amisi described this internal ODM faction as a grassroots effort designed to hold party leadership accountable. He said the movement focuses on amplifying the voices of ordinary citizens and ensuring the party remains true to its core values.
The group has already drawn a clear line in the sand regarding the 2027 general elections. The Linda Mwananchi team has vowed to block any potential coalition agreement with the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), insisting that ODM must field its own presidential candidate next year. This push for independence comes at a time of significant structural changes for Amisi within the party hierarchy.
On February 11, Amisi was removed from the ODM National Executive Committee (NEC) following his election as the Trans Nzoia county chairperson. Party officials clarified that this move was a legal necessity rather than a disciplinary action, as the ODM constitution forbids members from holding two offices simultaneously. As part of this transition, the party removed him and two others from the NEC’s official communication channels.
