Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi has declared that the Nyanza region must provide Kenya’s next president once William Ruto leaves office.
During an interdenominational church service in Kasipul Kabondo on Sunday, March 22, 2026, with President Ruto in the pews, the CS stated that the region will prepare a qualified successor to take the reins after the president’s term ends.
“When Ruto is exiting, this region must produce the next president of Kenya, and we will give you the right people with the right qualifications and right competence,” Mbadi said.
His comments came during the president’s four-day development tour of the Nyanza region, where the government is launching several infrastructure projects, including the extension of the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) to Busia.
Mbadi also announced that Homa Bay leaders have reached a consensus to support Governor Gladys Wanga for a second term. He stated that no members of the broad-based government team will challenge the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) chair in 2027.
“As leaders from this region, we are united. We do not want disruptions. We have decided that we will support the current leadership and allow our governor to serve a second term,” CS Mbadi announced.
The Treasury CS, who previously sought the seat in 2022 before losing to Wanga in the nominations, noted that the region’s leadership is now fully aligned. He added that they intend to maintain a peaceful governance structure within the county. He further mentioned that leaders like himself and Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo, both from Homa Bay, will back the county administration’s work.
“As the leadership of this region, we want peace, and we will ensure there is peace within our party, the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), and in its governance structures. Even those of us at the national level, like Raymond Omollo and myself, must support the leadership of the county,” Mbadi stated.
