Kenya Power Meter Reader Arrested Over Ksh 300,000 Runda Extortion Plot | BossNana International Radio

Detectives from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) apprehended a Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) staffer following an audacious extortion attempt in Nairobi’s upscale Runda estate. The suspect, identified as Bernard Githinji Maina, reportedly demanded a significant bribe from a resident to restore electricity services.

According to investigators, Maina, who serves as a meter reader in the Runda area, targeted a homeowner in the Runda Mumwe Estate.

The EACC revealed that the ordeal for the complainant began late last year. On October 25, 2025, the suspect allegedly disconnected power to the property under the guise of an “illegal connection,” despite the account holding no outstanding balance.

By January 24, 2026, the suspect reportedly escalated his demands, asking for Ksh 300,000 to facilitate a reconnection. To ensure compliance, investigators allege that Maina used intimidation tactics, warning the homeowner that a refusal would result in a fabricated electricity bill totaling Ksh 2 million.

The Sting Operation

After the victim filed a formal complaint on February 27, 2026, EACC officers moved swiftly to coordinate a trap. The operation reached its climax at Runda Mumwe Estate, where authorities caught Maina in the act.

The commission confirmed that the suspect was arrested as he allegedly received Ksh 180,000 from the complainant. Following the apprehension, officers escorted him to the Integrity Centre for processing before booking him at the Kilimani Police Station.

While the suspect spent the night in custody, investigators eventually released him on a cash bail of Ksh 50,000. The EACC continues to finalize the case file before presenting it to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

In an official statement regarding the incident, the anti-corruption agency reaffirmed its stance against “rogue” public servants who exploit citizens for financial gain:

“The Commission reiterates its commitment to tackling bribery at service delivery points and enhancing the quality of public services for all citizens.”
