As conflict intensifies across the Middle East, the Kenyan government has issued a high-level security advisory for its citizens living in or traveling through the region. Foreign and Diaspora Affairs Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi cautioned on Sunday that risks have spiked following a series of military strikes involving Israel, the United States, and Iran.
The warning follows a significant escalation on Saturday morning when Israeli and U.S. forces launched attacks on Iran. Tehran responded with retaliatory strikes targeting Israel and U.S. bases located in several Gulf states, sparking fears of a wider regional war.
Immediate Safety Measures Required
Mudavadi is calling for heightened vigilance among Kenyans in Iran, Israel, Qatar, the UAE, Bahrain, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, and Iraq. He urged these individuals to prioritize their personal safety and strictly adhere to local security directives.
“All Kenyan citizens in Iran, Israel, Qatar, UAE, Bahrain, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Iraq, and surrounding areas are advised to remain alert and monitor official communication from host governments regarding travel and safety updates,” Mudavadi said.
The Cabinet Secretary further advised citizens to “exercise extreme caution and avoid non-essential movement, especially near high-risk areas such as military facilities and crowded public spaces.”
Mandatory Registration for Diaspora Members
Beyond immediate physical safety, the government is focusing on logistics and communication. With regional airspace facing potential closures and flight schedules already seeing disruptions, the State Department for Diaspora Affairs is moving quickly to account for all Kenyans in the area.
Cabinet Secretary Mudavadi noted that those who have not yet registered with their nearest embassy must “do so immediately to enable timely updates from the missions and assistance during emergencies.”
Supporting this call to action, Diaspora Affairs Principal Secretary Roseline Njogu urged Kenyans to do the following:
