Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has sparked a political firestorm by questioning the circumstances surrounding the death of Emurua Dikirr MP Johana Ng’eno. The vocal lawmaker perished alongside five others on Saturday, February 28, 2026, when their helicopter went down in the Chepkiep Forest of Nandi County.
While early reports from the scene pointed to heavy rainfall and poor visibility as the primary causes, Gachagua used a church service in Nyandarua County on Sunday to suggest a more sinister motive. He alleged that the crash occurred amid a period of intense political “siege” against the legislator.
Allegations of Political Surveillance and Rivalry
Gachagua, a close ally of the late MP, claimed that Ng’eno had become a target due to his rising influence within the Kipsigis sub-tribe. He specifically named Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen and Kericho Senator Aaron Cheruiyot as primary opponents who sought to “suppress” the lawmaker’s regional leadership ambitions.
In a startling revelation, Gachagua further alleged that the National Intelligence Service (NIS) had bugged his own conversations with Ng’eno prior to his removal from office.
“He had been under a lot of siege from Murkomen and Cheruiyot trying to suppress his ambition to be the leader of the Kipsigis community,” Gachagua stated. “Any time a leader has emerged to lead, the community has faced challenges. We don’t want to say anything, but we want to call for thorough investigations for truth to be known.”
Call for Independent International Investigators
The former deputy president expressed a total lack of confidence in the government’s ability to conduct an impartial inquiry. He argued that as long as Kipchumba Murkomen oversees the Interior Ministry, the findings will remain under a cloud of suspicion.
To ensure transparency, Gachagua is calling on President William Ruto to invite foreign agencies to lead the probe. He specifically suggested the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) from the United States or the United Kingdom’s Scotland Yard.
“Murkomen can’t be CS Interior and the family of Ng’eno and other Kenyans expect fair and transparent investigations because Murkomen has been fighting Ng’eno,” he argued. “Otherwise, we ask that we get Scotland Yard or the FBI to carry out an independent investigation into the air crash that caused the demise of Johana Ng’eno.”
