Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru has called on the Mt Kenya community to stay united and honor past political commitments, warning that credibility and trust are key to retaining the region’s influence in national politics.
Speaking on Saturday during the launch of the Mutithi Health Centre maternity wing in Mwea, Waiguru urged residents to respect the political pact made during former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s tenure – famously phrased as “Yangu kumi, ya Ruto kumi” – and warned that breaking promises could weaken the region’s bargaining power.
“Uhuru himself said ‘yangu kumi, ya Ruto kumi’. As Mt Kenya, we must honour our promise. Politics is about trust, and once you break trust, no one takes you seriously again,” Waiguru told the crowd.
The governor reminded the community that while Mt Kenya commands a large voting bloc, numbers alone cannot form a government. She cautioned that internal divisions and political betrayal could isolate the region from national decision-making.
“We may have the numbers, but numbers alone cannot build a government. If Mt Kenya becomes known for breaking agreements, other communities will simply walk away from us,” she said.
Waiguru also took a swipe at former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, asserting that his impeachment had weakened his leadership and undermined his ability to champion Mt Kenya’s interests effectively.
“Leadership is about direction and credibility. You cannot lead people when you have lost both. Mt Kenya must be careful not to follow leaders who have no clear political path,” she noted.
She further urged residents to remain committed to the current administration during challenging times.
“You do not abandon the house you built simply because it is raining. You stay, fix the roof, and move forward together,” Waiguru said.
Her remarks come as political temperatures rise in Mt Kenya, with leaders repositioning themselves ahead of future national elections, and loyalty to President William Ruto emerging as a major dividing line.
Kirinyaga Central MP Gachoki Gitari defended Waiguru, praising her development record and growing national influence, suggesting it has unsettled some political players.
“I have been following your work closely, and the results speak for themselves. Many second-term governors relax and wait for their term to end, but you have continued to deliver,” Gitari said.
“Now that you are a true daughter of the mountain, you are making some men sleepless. They feel threatened because they know you can be picked as Deputy President,” he added.
