The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has issued a detailed advisory for motorists on the civilian vehicle re-registration process, outlining steps, requirements, and online procedures.
In a social media update on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, the authority confirmed that the entire re-registration process is now conducted online via the NTSA portal, accessible through the eCitizen website.
The re-registration process applies to vehicle owners seeking changes such as number plate replacement, ownership updates, or other approved re-registration purposes. NTSA noted that civilian vehicle re-registration is crucial for officially transferring ownership from seller to buyer, helping to prevent legal and financial disputes.
To begin, vehicle owners must log in to the NTSA portal, navigate to the ‘Motor Vehicle Services’ section, select the vehicle re-registration option, and provide the necessary vehicle information, including their KRA PIN. This allows the system to retrieve and verify the vehicle’s details.
Once verification is complete, applicants select their preferred number plate type and upload supporting documents, including the logbook, National ID, and KRA PIN certificate. After confirming the declaration, they submit the application and pay the re-registration and inspection fees online.
When ownership transfer is involved, the buyer must log in to their NTSA account to accept or decline the consent notification. Applicants then choose a collection centre for the new number plate and logbook and indicate whether an authorized person will collect the documents on their behalf.
Following submission, the seller receives a notification to book a vehicle inspection, selecting a convenient inspection centre and date. Once the inspection passes, the applicant submits the original physical documents for verification. NTSA reviews the application and, upon approval, allocates the new number plate.
Requirements for Civilian Vehicle Re-Registration
NTSA has outlined specific documents required to support the application, including:
- A formal request letter explaining the reason for re-registration
- A DCI report confirming the owner’s request
- The original certificate of registration
- A tape lift of chassis and engine numbers from the DCI
- A KRA PIN certificate of the vehicle owner
- A copy of the National ID of the vehicle owner
The advisory comes as Kenya moves toward full enforcement of instant traffic fines. NTSA is also considering the installation of speed cameras across major roads to reduce accidents and make it easier to apprehend offenders.
Vehicle owners are encouraged to complete the online process promptly to ensure compliance and avoid delays in ownership transfer.
