CCTV Footage, Witness Statements: Inside the DCI Investigation into Cyrus Jirongo’s Death | BossNana International Radio

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has disclosed that preliminary findings into the death of former Cabinet minister and veteran politician Cyrus Jirongo point to a road traffic accident, with investigators finding no evidence so far to suggest foul play.

In a statement released on Monday, the DCI confirmed that Jirongo died on the night of December 13, 2025, at the Karai area along the busy Nakuru–Nairobi Highway. Authorities said they deployed investigators immediately after the incident to determine the exact circumstances surrounding his death.

“The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) wishes to update the public on the ongoing investigations into the tragic death of Hon. Cyrus Jirongo,” the agency said, noting that it constituted a multi-agency team to handle the case.

According to the DCI, the team comprises homicide detectives, specialists from the Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau, and forensic experts from the National Forensic Laboratory. Investigators visited and processed the scene, secured and preserved key exhibits, and documented all physical evidence relevant to the case.

Detectives also retrieved CCTV footage from an Egol petrol station near the scene of the incident and subjected it to detailed forensic analysis. In addition, the team obtained the bus manifest and amateur videos recorded by members of the public at the scene, which are also under review.

As part of the ongoing probe, investigators recorded statements from several key witnesses, including Jirongo’s widow, Ann Lanoi Pertet, who was the first family member contacted by authorities after the incident. Detectives also took statements from the driver and conductor of the Climax bus involved in the crash, as well as staff members at the nearby petrol station.

The DCI further revealed that senior politicians Moses Wetang’ula, Rebman Malala, and Ibrahim Sambul, who had interacted with Jirongo at Karen Oasis restaurant on the evening of December 12, 2025, voluntarily recorded statements to assist with the investigations.

Seven passengers who were travelling in the bus also came forward to give their accounts, while detectives questioned Julius Kiprotich Chelule, the driver of an alleged rescue bus with registration number KCU 573A.

“Based on the evidence gathered and analysed to date, the incident appears to be a road traffic accident, with no indications of foul play,” the DCI stated.

The agency added that once investigators complete the remaining processes, they will forward the inquiry file to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) for further directions. These directions may include consideration of possible criminal charges against the PSV driver, depending on the evidence on record.

The DCI extended its “deepest condolences to the family, relatives and friends of Hon. Cyrus Jirongo” and appealed to the public and political leaders to refrain from speculation that could undermine the investigations or cause unnecessary public anxiety.

“Any person who possesses information that they believe may assist the ongoing investigations is encouraged to come forward,” the statement said.
