Police Probe Violent Clash at Kariobangi Church as Gachagua, NPS Issue Conflicting Accounts | BossNana International Radio

The National Police Service (NPS) has launched a comprehensive investigation into a violent confrontation that broke out during a Sunday service at the Kariobangi North PCEA Church, leaving six people injured and sparking political tensions.

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, who attended the service, accused police officers of launching an attack on the congregation to punish the people of Kariobangi North for rejecting a UDA candidate. He alleged that police and hired “goons” opened fire at the church, seriously injuring two supporters of the Democratic Change Party (DCP).

Gachagua further claimed that officers lobbed tear gas inside the church compound, putting clergy, women, and children in harm’s way. He condemned the incident as a defilement of a holy place. Those injured were treated at nearby health facilities.

However, police spokesman Michael Muchiri offered a sharply contrasting account of what transpired during the Thanksgiving service held for a ward candidate who had recently won a by-election.

Muchiri said two police officers stationed at the church noticed a group of rowdy youths armed with crude weapons approaching the compound as the service was ending. The officers immediately called for reinforcements. Moments later, a second group of youths arrived, appearing ready to confront the first group. Police intervened to prevent the situation from spiraling out of control.

The chaos spilled onto the church grounds, temporarily disrupting the service. Six people were injured during the melee, and emergency responders transported them to hospital for treatment.

Muchiri described the violence as “planned and premeditated,” adding that the Nairobi Regional Police Commander and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations had been directed to deploy all available resources to uncover the truth behind the confrontation.

The NPS also dismissed claims that officers fired tear gas inside the church. According to Muchiri, church leaders confirmed that no tear gas was released in the sanctuary or within the compound. The service later resumed and concluded peacefully at around 2:00 p.m.

Police condemned the violence, particularly occurring in a place of worship, and extended sympathies to all those injured.

The NPS urged witnesses to come forward with any information that may assist investigations. Members of the public can report through local police stations, any law enforcement officer, or toll-free numbers 999 and 112.
