A delegation from the Uganda People’s Defence Forces has concluded a benchmarking tour to Kenya’s Defence Forces Welfare Services in a bid to enhance welfare packages for military personnel and their families across the East African region.
The visit, which was held at the DEFWES Headquarters, Moi Air Base in Eastleigh, Nairobi, sought to share ideas and best practices on key welfare areas including housing, healthcare, education, and post-service support.
The UPDF delegation was led by Deputy Commander Land Force Major General Francis Takirwa, while DEFWES Managing Director Brigadier Peter Limo welcomed the team and presented an overview of Kenya’s robust military welfare framework.
Brigadier Limo’s briefing covered the establishment and operations of DEFWES, veterans’ support initiatives, cooperative societies, and income-generating projects designed to empower service members and their families economically.
During the visit, the Ugandan team paid a courtesy call on Commander Kenya Air Force Major General Bernard Waliaula, who encouraged them to adopt strategies that could enhance their own welfare systems.
The delegation also toured the DEFWES warehouse and DEFWES Mall in Embakasi, where they witnessed practical welfare models and effective service delivery mechanisms at work.
Speaking during the tour, Major General Takirwa praised the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) for their innovative and structured approach to welfare management.
“Thank you, DEFWES officials, for your time in making us understand your Defence Welfare Service, and by the end of this trip we will emulate the knowledge and embrace the visit again,” he said.
Present were Defence Attaché to Uganda Brigadier General Mc Kamugira, General Manager Defence Force Shop Uganda Limited (DEFSUL) Brigadier General Metland Bitumbika, and DEFSUL Company Secretary Major Seth Ngabirano.
