Detectives from the Homicide Unit have released ten more bodies of Shakahola massacre victims, followers of controversial preacher Paul Mackenzie, for burial in the Western and Nyanza regions.
Families gathered at the morgue to identify and view their loved ones, whose bodies had been confirmed through DNA testing. A Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) vehicle later transported the remains to the victims’ respective homes for burial.
According to authorities, the bodies released include one from Likuyani, two from Malava in Kakamega, two from Butere, two from Emuhaya, and one from Kisii. This brings the total number of bodies released so far to 11, following the earlier release of one victim’s remains to Meru last week.
Police said the DCI is helping the affected families meet transport costs so that victims are given a good send-off, since most cannot afford to move the bodies.
More and more families have arrived at the morgue for counseling and tracing ahead of viewing the bodies. Counselors guide and support relatives through the painful identification process and help them prepare for burial arrangements.
The Shakahola tragedy shocked the nation in 2023 after authorities discovered over 400 bodies in a remote Malindi forest, where Mackenzie’s followers were allegedly urged to starve themselves to death.
