London-based Kenyan actress Serah Teshna Ndanu has disclosed that her new production house, STN Productions, and its first feature, Bus 338, were self-funded.
The film premiered last week at the Battersea Power Station Cinema in London, attracting a lively crowd of Kenyan film lovers and notable guests, including Serah’s husband, former Harambee Stars captain Victor Wanyama. The screening also featured appearances by co-stars Pascal Tokodi and Robert Agengo, who both play lead roles in the film.
Serah shared that she took a personal financial gamble to bring Bus 338 to life. “I can’t say it was a million-dollar project, but it meant parting with a significant amount of money that I might not get back. But I am content with it because it went towards something I’m passionate about,” she told Sinema Focus.
Her decision to found STN Productions was as personal as it was professional. Despite a decade-long acting career with acclaimed performances in Igiza and Sumu La Penzi, Serah noted that her achievements are often overshadowed by her marriage to the celebrated footballer.
“I honestly can’t wait for the day when women will be celebrated for their accomplishments without being asked ‘How did you do it?’, ‘Who did it for you?’ or ‘Show us how you got there,’” she said as quoted.
Bus 338 is a gripping survival thriller set on a long-distance bus journey that quickly spirals into chaos, testing the will and resilience of its passengers.
With this project, Serah joins a rising generation of Kenyan filmmakers who are redefining the country’s cinematic landscape toward bold and genre-defying stories that can resonate on the global stage.
