Nyamira Governor Amos Nyaribo has been officially removed from office after the County Assembly passed a third impeachment motion against him. In a dramatic Tuesday session, 23 MCAs voted in favour of the motion, with none opposing, effectively sealing the governor’s fate.
Speaker Thaddeus Nyabaro confirmed that his office will notify Senate Speaker Amason Kingi to initiate the next procedural steps in the impeachment process.
The motion, tabled by Bonyamatuta Ward MCA Julius Kimwomi Matwere, accused Governor Nyaribo of abusing office and violating legal protocols in his administration. At the heart of the motion were allegations linked to Nyaribo’s involvement in the previous impeachment saga and his support for a parallel assembly faction, popularly called “Bunge Mashinani,” led by former Speaker Enock Okero.
The motion claims that Nyaribo “deliberately engaged, endorsed and supported an unlawful, illegal and unconstitutional ‘Bunge Mashinani’ gazette,” despite his earlier removal attempts. Matwere described the governor’s conduct as a “relentless and calculated assault” on the Constitution.
The Bunge Mashinani group had been operating outside official assembly chambers, holding unauthorized sessions across the county. Additional charges against Nyaribo include irregular appointments of committee members in Keroka town and the illegal creation and approval of a Public Service Board appointment panel through the alternative assembly.
Critics also argued that Nyaribo approved county funds to appoint Peris Nyaboke-Oroko as County Agriculture Minister during a period of contested assembly leadership, saying it was beyond the law.
This is the third attempt at impeaching Nyaribo, who had survived earlier impeachment motions in October 2023 and September 2024. Those earlier motions had cited mismanagement, nepotism, and failure to follow statutory deductions but had narrowly missed securing the necessary votes.
