Three DCI officers sustained serious injuries while arresting suspects linked to the murder of two youths in Opondo, Kasipul Constituency last week, ahead of the parliamentary by-election.
Among the injured was DCI Officer in Charge of Rachuonyo South Sub-County, Daniel Muhuhi, who, along with two colleagues, faced an aggressive attack by armed youths while attempting to apprehend the suspects at the homestead of the late former Kasipul MP Ong’odo Were in Kachien Village, Central Kasipul Ward.
Homa Bay County Police Commander Lawrence Koilem confirmed the incident, explaining that the suspects had been tracked to Kosele Trading Centre but fled and hid at the former MP’s homestead. The officers pursued them and successfully arrested five suspects.
“Before they could leave, a crowd of over 100 youths stormed the compound and assaulted the officers with crude weapons to prevent the arrests,” Koilem said.
During the confrontation, the three officers were seriously injured. In the ensuing chaos, the arrested suspects managed to escape, with one fleeing while still in handcuffs.
The injured officers were immediately taken to Rachuonyo South Sub-County Hospital for treatment.
Koilem added that police have launched a manhunt to rearrest the escaped suspects, vowing to ensure accountability for both the murders and the violent disruption of the arrest operation.
