Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has made an emotional appeal to Mt Kenya voters, urging them to back him as the region’s political kingpin as he prepares for the 2027 presidential race.
Speaking passionately on Saturday, Gachagua said he was ready to unite the Mt Kenya region with the Akamba community to deliver victory in the next general election, a coalition he described as the ultimate “secret weapon.”
“Allow me to plan our 2027 contest. Let me coordinate the drive to get loyal leaders who cannot betray our interests. I beg you to uplift me as your leader. I have placed my position, life, and wealth in danger for the sake of this community,” Gachagua pleaded before a crowd in Gatanga Constituency, Murang’a County.
He went on to emphasize that the path to power lay in regional unity, saying, “Our secret weapon is GEMA plus Akamba. Be wary of divisive political parties. If we stick to that script of unity with the Akamba, we shall prevail.”
Gachagua spoke during a somber burial ceremony for five family members who died in a tragic road accident on October 25, 2025. The deceased were among 17 passengers returning from a dowry ceremony in Kiambu County when their vehicle plunged into River Kiama in Murang’a County.
Despite the grief that filled the event, Gachagua used the platform to reaffirm his political mission, declaring that his Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) will spearhead an aggressive push to capture all Mt Kenya elective positions in 2027.
“I remain the most passionate leader in this region when it comes to protecting the interests of our people,” he asserted.
Denies Reunion Talks with Ruto
The former deputy president also dismissed growing speculation that he was in talks to reunite with President William Ruto. Gachagua made it clear that reconciliation was not an option, saying his focus was now squarely on uniting Mt Kenya and leading the region to political independence.
“It is not in my wildest dreams to seek a reunion with President Ruto and his allies. They remain my top priority to work towards their defeat in 2027,” he declared.
He reiterated that his goal was to lead a solid, united Mt Kenya front into the 2027 race, saying, “If you allow me to lead you into the 2027 duel, I will ensure that we are united to a man and combine efforts with our Akamba neighbours to deliver a win.”
Gachagua praised the Akamba community as a natural ally of Mt Kenya, saying their unity would serve as a foundation for broader alliances across Kenya. “The Akamba are part of the Mt Kenya communities, and in that unity, we will venture out to seek more partnerships with other communities and their leaders for an emphatic win,” he said.
Defends Silence During Raila Odinga’s Mourning Period
Gachagua also clarified his two-week silence following the death of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, saying it was a deliberate act of respect. “I have been silent for two weeks. I have been watching others dance, not because I don’t want to or don’t know how to dance… I just chose to be a witness,” he said.
Confrontation with KICC Chair Sam Waweru
The event took a tense turn when Kenya International Conference Centre (KICC) Board Chair Sam Waweru, delivering greetings from President Ruto, Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, and Woman Representative Betty Maina, told Gachagua that “we will stop that Wantam reggae.”
Waweru urged leaders to focus on service delivery before engaging in politics. “We are collectively agitating for service delivery first, and later we can play politics… otherwise, just know that this Wantam reggae will die,” he said.
However, his remarks angered mourners, who booed him for “speaking on behalf of outsiders.”
Gachagua swiftly hit back, telling Waweru to respect the region’s sentiments. “Let us advise this man because he is an upcoming leader. We have a slaughter government. We cannot forgive a slaughterhouse for our children. You cannot come here to lecture us about a government working overtime to humiliate us as a community,” Gachagua said.
He went on to accuse the current administration of neglecting Mt Kenya farmers. “We cannot be compelled to follow a government that is killing our agricultural sector, discriminating against us, and badmouthing us in public rallies,” he added.
Hits Out at Farouk Kibet and Ruto’s Administration
The DCP leader further accused President Ruto’s aide, Farouk Kibet, of openly mocking Mt Kenya leaders. “We demand that Mr Kibet cease ridiculing Mt Kenya people and their leaders. He should stop accusing us of having dirty souls. We voted for his boss in 2023. It is only that democracy allows us to vote for someone else in 2027,” Gachagua said.
He ended his speech with a bold statement, warning that the mountain’s political allegiance would shift in the next general election.
“President Ruto will know that our hearts are not dirty, as Farouk says, in 2027, since we will, in good faith, vote for someone else in even greater numbers than we did for him in 2022,” he declared.
