The 8th Kenya International Industrial Expo (KIIE) kicked off in Nairobi on Thursday with the key boost to Kenya–China trade cooperation following the signing of Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Kenyan National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KNCCI) and the China Chamber of Commerce for Import and Export of Machinery and Electronic Products (CCCME).
The MoU provides for intensified cooperation in knowledge transfer, facilitation of trade, as well as industrial studies with opportunities for collaborative ventures and transfer of technology.
The deal was received with enthusiasm by the KNCCI CEO Kenneth Mutai who said it was timely for the country’s industrialization agenda.
“Manufacturing contributes just 7.6% to our GDP, yet research shows that a 1% increase in output creates over 200,000 jobs. This partnership with China will help us scale up industrial growth and empower SMEs,” he said.
CCCME’s Shi Yonghong reiterated the promise by China to further deepen economic cooperation for Kenya’s growth.
“This MoU reflects our shared vision of building stable supply chains and supporting Kenya’s industrial transformation. Chinese enterprises are ready to invest and integrate with local industries,” he said.
Afripeak Expo Kenya Managing Director Gao Wei, the official organizer, underscored the expo’s importance in connecting businesses.
“The Kenya International Industrial Expo is more than an exhibition; it is a platform for innovation and partnership. This MoU signals the start of a new phase where global solutions meet Africa’s opportunities,” Gao said.
The three-day expo runs until September 6 at the Sarit Expo Centre. It has drawn more than 200 Chinese exhibitors and over 6,000 delegates from around the world. Exhibitors are showcasing cutting-edge technologies in construction, energy, ICT, automotive, textiles, and agriculture.
