Police arrested a matatu driver whose tout appeared in a viral video performing dangerous stunts and charged the driver with traffic violations after an outcry from the public.
The driver, according to the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), operated negligently, applying sudden braking, sharp turns, and high-speed acceleration — maneuvers that could have caused passengers to suffer fatal falls.
The tout was swaying on the door handles of the matatu, doing stunts as the vehicle accelerated.
“The stunt was reckless and extremely dangerous. Sudden braking, sharp turns, or acceleration can easily throw the passenger off balance, leading to a fatal fall,” NTSA stated.
Arrest and Court Charges
NTSA confirmed that officers arrested the driver shortly after the clip went viral. The authorities subsequently arraigned him in court and charged him with various road traffic offences. The court released him on a cash bail of Ksh100,000 or bond of Ksh300,000.
The NTSA called for both motorists and passengers to observe road safety in public transport. “While in the vehicle, passengers including the conductor must always use seats and seatbelts for their safety,” NTSA noted.
The authority commended members of the public for reporting the incident and urged them to continue being watchful in improving road safety.
