Kenya’s top-flight football has received a massive financial boost after the Football Kenya Federation (FKF), in partnership with SportPesa, officially launched the 2025/26 Premier League season in Nairobi on Tuesday, September 16, 2025.
FKF President Hussein Mohammed announced that the new campaign will feature a Ksh20 million prize pool, combining Ksh10 million from SportPesa and an additional Ksh10 million commitment from FKF. Under the new setup, league winners will earn Ksh15 million, runners-up will earn Ksh3 million, and third-placed side will earn Ksh2 million.
Mohammed described the move as a turning point for Kenyan football, stressing that the federation is determined to build a league grounded in professionalism, accountability, and pride.
“For the first time in years, our league champions will be rewarded with prize money befitting a premier competition – Ksh15 million for the winners, Ksh3 million for the runners-up, and Ksh2 million for the second runners-up. This investment not only motivates our clubs and players but also sets the stage for a more competitive and vibrant league,” he said.
SportPesa CEO Ronald Karauri echoed Mohammed’s optimism, affirming that the company is committed to reviving Kenyan football’s lost glory.
“We had set Ksh6 million as the prize money for the Kenya Premier League. We sat down with the FKF President and are reviewing it to Ksh10 million,” he said, highlighting that the sponsorship will prioritize player welfare and recognition.
The deal also introduces Player of the Month awards and an end-of-season gala to celebrate outstanding performers.
The landmark 10-year partnership, valued at Ksh1.12 billion, will inject Ksh85 million in the first year, increasing annually to Ksh145 million by year ten. Of this, 60% – about Ksh51 million this season – goes directly to the 18 Premier League clubs, while 40% will fund FKF’s administrative and operational needs.
The 2025/26 SportPesa Premier League kicks off on Saturday, September 20, with live broadcast coverage by Azam TV, marking the dawn of a new era in Kenyan football.
