Media personality Betty Kyallo, comedians Mulamwah, Terence Creative, and MC Jessy are part of Kenya’s representatives for a cultural exchange trip to China.
The Chinese Embassy in Kenya selected the four as part of a group to be toured around Hunan and Fujian provinces from September 15 to 23.
The visit, which will last a week, is intended to expose China’s rich culture, breathtaking scenery, and projects, according to the embassy. The Kenyan influencers will document their experiences and post them on their social media handles, giving their fans a first-hand view of life in the two provinces.
The trip highlights the growing role of digital creators in international diplomacy and cultural exchange. The organizers believe that by pairing prominent Kenyan entertainers with a host of Chinese experiences, they can boost people-to-people relations while thinking beyond traditional government-driven efforts.
Hunan and Fujian, the two provinces covered in the tour, are both celebrated for achieving a balance between history and modernization. Hunan is perhaps best known as the birthplace of Mao Zedong and for its scenically dramatic natural beauty, while Fujian is a coastal utopia and trade and technology hub.
This is not the first time the Chinese Embassy has partnered with Kenyan creatives on cultural programming. In recent years, Beijing has been actively leveraging Africa’s fast-growing influencer ecosystem to broaden relations, particularly with the youth who more readily identify through social media storytelling.
As the tour kicks off this week, Kenyan fans will be able to follow the experience in real-time on the creators’ online platforms.
