Police Call Nanak House Break-in a ‘Targeted’ Dispute, Say Nairobi CBD Safe from Goons

The National Police Service (NPS) has played down fears of a wider crime wave in Nairobi’s city centre after four shops were broken into at Nanak House last Friday, 22 August 2025.

In a statement issued on Monday, 25 August, the service said detectives now believe the raid was “deliberate and specific,” pointing to an ongoing commercial disagreement among the affected parties.

The matter, according to police, is already before the courts.

“One suspect is in custody and investigators expect additional arrests,” Nairobi Regional Police Commander noted in the briefing.

Officers did not disclose the nature of the dispute or the value of goods lost.

The response followed a television report that painted the incident as fresh evidence of rising insecurity in the Central Business District.

NPS rejected that characterisation, insisting the CBD “remains one of the safest places to do business” and crediting daily patrols and public cooperation for what it called an overall “commendably good” security picture nationwide.

NPS pledged to keep the public updated on both the Nanak House inquiry and any further action against suspects linked to unrest in the capital.
