Cabinet Secretary for Cooperatives and MSME Development Wycliffe Oparanya has called on Kenyan youth to seize the opportunities the government has set aside for them, cautioning that such chances may never come twice.
Speaking on Tuesday, August 12, 2025, during International Youth Day celebrations at Masinde Muliro University Grounds in Kakamega County, Oparanya appreciated President William Ruto for placing youth empowerment as a national priority.
“I want to thank you (Ruto) for the good work you are doing. Our youth have something to do. You are heavily investing in the youth population,” he said.
Turning to the crowd of young people, Oparanya urged them to treat every opportunity with urgency and seriousness. “To the youth, take the opportunity that comes your way seriously. It will never come again,” he advised.
He reminded them that youth is a passing stage, noting they have a limited period to transition into other stages of life. “Being a youth is a transition. You have 17 years to transit, from youth to the other brackets,” he explained.
The Cabinet Secretary highlighted a variety of government initiatives tailored for young people, from job creation programs to entrepreneurship funding and skills development projects. “There are so many opportunities in government the President has created for the youths,” he emphasized.
Oparanya cautioned against complacency, noting that the people who utilize these initiatives can elevate themselves and contribute towards Kenya’s economic and social growth.
“When the government invests in you, it is because we believe you can use that chance to grow and also help others,” he said.
He concluded by reiterating that young people are at the center of shaping Kenya’s future, noting that the manner in which they conduct themselves today will make them fit to be prepared for leadership and responsibility tomorrow.
