Bolt has rolled out a first-of-its-kind dash cam service in Kenya through a partnership with AI-driven mobility tech firm Driver Technologies, offering drivers access to advanced safety features at a heavily discounted rate.
The initiative gives Bolt drivers one month of free access to the premium dash cam app. After that, they can continue using the app at a 75% discount, paying only KES 386 per month.
With the offer, Bolt driver-partners can turn their smartphones into both a forward-facing exterior and driver-facing interior dash camera. The app runs seamlessly in the background alongside other apps, using Picture-in-Picture (PiP) mode to reassure drivers that recording is active without interfering with the Bolt app’s functionality.
“Driver partners frequently share that dash cams provide not only enhanced security and peace of mind, but also greater accountability in their trips. Unfortunately, the cost of acquiring a reliable device has often been a barrier,” said Dimmy Kanyankole, Bolt’s General Manager for Rides.
He added that partnering with Driver Technologies tackles this challenge by making premium dash cam features affordable. “Through our collaboration with Driver Technologies, we are addressing this challenge by offering discounted access to premium dash cam features. This empowers drivers with tools that improve safety, support accurate clarification of incidents, and foster greater trust between drivers and passengers, all at a reduced cost.”
The new feature transforms a driver’s smartphone camera into a recording device for trips, securely storing footage to protect both drivers and riders in case of disputes or incidents.
Bolt said the initiative aims to reduce safety-related incidents by providing evidence that customer support teams, the police, and insurance companies can use when accidents or disagreements arise.
Installing the dash cam is optional, but the company emphasizes that it benefits drivers, who often encounter situations where complaints boil down to conflicting accounts without proof. The recordings can also be valuable for insurance claims, as the app captures both the interior and exterior of the vehicle during trips.
This partnership adds to a suite of existing safety features in Bolt’s in-app toolkit. Recent efforts to enhance driver safety in Kenya include Rider Verification, pick-up codes, and Trusted Contacts features.
Under the new partnership, Driver Technologies will provide IT support and manage data services for Kenyan drivers.
