Three university students were on Monday, August 25, 2025, charged with plotting to siphon more than Sh7.8 million from customer accounts at Sidian Bank.
Nelson Christiano Nangole, John Oboni Odidi and Phostine Hesbon Ochieng appeared before Senior Principal Magistrate Geoffrey Onsarigo to answer to counts of theft, handling stolen property and laundering proceeds of crime.
Prosecutors say the scheme unfolded on January 11, 2025, at several undisclosed locations across the country.
Investigators allege the trio, working with accomplices still at large, transferred Sh7,882,845 from various Sidian Bank accounts into personal and third-party bank accounts, as well as M-Pesa wallets.
According to the charge sheet, Odidi, a student at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, is accused of funnelling Sh458,313 into two I&M Bank accounts under his name.
Ochieng, who studies at Thika Technical Training Institute, allegedly moved Sh451,346 from the Kericho Tractor Centre account to his National Bank and M-Pesa accounts.
Nangole is accused of retaining Sh113,220 in his M-Pesa wallet while knowing the funds were illegally obtained.
Defence lawyers Miss Otieno and Mr Ogolla asked the court to grant bail, describing the accused as students from low-income families who pose no flight risk.
The court heard that one accused supports two families, while another relies on a single parent.
The court released each student on a cash bail of Sh300,000 or an alternative bond of Sh1 million.
The matter will be mentioned on September 3 for a pre-trial hearing.
If convicted, the students face potential prison terms as well as orders to repay the stolen money. Police said investigations are ongoing to trace additional suspects believed to have benefited from the alleged fraud.
