A dramatic airport escape attempt took a wrong turn for a 57-year-old drug trafficker who landed at Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) from Bangkok, Thailand.
Wong Hiu Fung arrived without incident and passed through immigration without any issue. However, things took a suspicious turn when he showed up at the customs screening area with two large suitcases.
As customs officers were preparing to open his luggage, Wong pretended to take a phone call then vanished, leaving his luggage behind and leaving the officers bewildered.
Inside the suitcases, Anti-Narcotics Unit detectives discovered 41 sachets of cannabis sativa, neatly concealed and which weighed 41.7 kilograms.
Detectives immediately launched a manhunt using forensic clues, and this led them to a hotel in South C. Wong was nabbed and taken back to JKIA Police Station.
Wong was placed in custodyas police prepare to bring his case before the court. Police praised the swift response by airport security and anti-narcotics agents, crediting their training and collaboration for foiling the trafficking attempt.
