A significant number of Spotify’s 675 million worldwide users were looking to leave the giant audio streaming platform after a global outage this week.According to analysis from McLuck, data firm, searches for ‘Spotify alternatives’ rose by 488%, while ‘delete Spotify’ shot up by 566%. Some usetrs stated that they would switch to competing streaming platforms such as YouTube or Apple Music.
Whether these were knee-jerk reactions or signs of deeper dissatisfaction is up for debate, but one thing's for sure the glitch gave people pause and perhaps demonstrated how popular the platform is around the globe.
“For millions, Spotify isn’t just a music app. It’s part of their routine, their commute, even their workday soundtrack. So when it stops working, people notice. And based on Google’s search data, they’re not just noticing, they’re actively questioning their loyalty. While the platform quickly recovered, the incident shows how a single outage can rattle users and send them looking elsewhere. Whether it's Apple Music, Tidal, YouTube Music, or one of the growing crop of smaller competitors, Spotify might want to heed the warning signs.” A spokesperson for McLuck commented on the research:
Google searches for ‘Spotify not working’ and related terms exploded by 9,900% following the platform’s April 16 outage.
During the outage, users reported that they were still able to play music they had downloaded to their device, but were unable to view artists or use the app's search function.
The problems began in the afternoon and appeared to affect both mobile and desktop users, with widespread reports of a mysterious ‘502 error’
Spotify acknowledged the outage and even forced to quash rumours that the App had been hacked. The platform did not explain what caused the problems shooting down the reports of a security hack by saying the information was “completely inaccurate."
Spotify managed to restore the service later in the day but the internet had already erupted with concern and curiosity.
As users scrambled to figure out if the problem was on their end or everyone’s many turned to real-time outage maps and social media to confirm their suspicions before the company issued an official update.
The web version of Spotify didn’t escape scrutiny either. Searches related to whether the browser-based version was down jumped by 809%, suggesting people were desperate to access their music through any means possible, or maybe just hoping a different platform would work.
