Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua has revealed how he initially sought to trigger a political showdown in Mount Kenya by persuading Nyandarua Senator John Methu to resign from the United Democratic Alliance (UDA).
Addressing a diaspora town hall meeting in Marlborough, Massachusetts, on October 3, the former deputy president explained that he intended for Methu to step down from his Senate seat, forcing a high-stakes by-election where the senator would seek a fresh mandate under the DCP banner.
Gachagua noted that he designed the strategy to test his political dominance in Mount Kenya following a parliamentary by-election loss in Mbeere North. He stated that the plan aimed to directly challenge President William Ruto in the region following their political fallout and his 2024 impeachment.
“When the MP died, I had decided I wanted a contest with William Ruto. I wanted to meet him head-on because he disrespected me,” Gachagua stated.
“I had actually persuaded Senator John Methu to resign his seat as Nyadarua senator, so there is a by-election. I wanted us to test ourselves,” he added.
However, the resignation scheme stalled following the death of former Ol Kalou MP David Kiaraho, which automatically triggered a parliamentary by-election in Nyandarua County.
“Before we could settle, our brother passed on,” Gachagua explained, adding that the development prompted him to shelve the Senate plan and redirect resources toward the Ol Kalou mini-poll.
In the ensuing Ol Kalou parliamentary contest, DCP candidate Sammy Waweru Ngiotho secured a decisive victory over UDA candidate Samwel Muchina Nyagah. Ngiotho garnered 35,440 votes against Nyagah’s 5,450 votes.
Following the election, Methu, who led the DCP campaign efforts in Ol Kalou, assumed the role of the party’s designated Secretary General without relinquishing his Senate seat.
