President William Ruto launched a fiery broadside at Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna following the launch of a new political outfit, throwing cold water on its viability ahead of the 2027 General Election.
While avoiding direct mention of Sifuna’s name, President Ruto clearly directed his remarks toward the lawmaker and the newly unveiled Equitable Party (TEP). Sifuna launched the party in Nairobi on October 4, where aligned members designated him as their preferred presidential candidate as Kenya’s opposition navigates a high-stakes search for a presidential contender.
Speaking to residents in West Pokot County during an inspection of the Kapsait-Sondany Road and Last Mile Connectivity projects, marking the third day of his North Rift development tour, the Head of State dismissed the new movement as empty. He accused its leadership of soliciting small financial contributions from local women while spending time socializing in bars.
“Niliona mwingine Mr Empty, alienda kulaunch chama inaitwa the Empty Party akatoka hapo akaenda moja kwa moja mpaka kwa bar, mara ya mwisho tulimwona na Kofi Olomide na meza imejaa pombe kali ile ya jina mbili mbili sijui Jonny Walker, sijui Jonny natembeya sijui nani… huko ndiyo tulimwona mara ya mwisho,” Ruto said.
The president questioned whether the party holds any real potential to present a credible political alternative to Kenyan voters, claiming the outfit has already stalled before gaining any meaningful momentum.
“Mko na Kibarua. Mtu mwenyewe ni empty, Chama ni empty, ile imebaki ni pombe halafu anaanza kuitisha wamama shilingi kumi kumi… hiyo Chama mtapeleka wapi imekwama kwa bar?” he said.
Challenging the opposition’s political strategy, President Ruto openly questioned how leaders expect voters to back such platforms:
“Na hiyo ndiyo mnasema sisi wakenya tuwapigie kura, yaani mumetupima kabisa mkatupima na ufala kiasi hiyo?” he posed.
