Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua commended the massive turnout at Sunday’s Linda Mwananchi rally in Nairobi, calling the mobilization a clear sign of the opposition’s expanding strength ahead of the 2027 general election.
The former deputy president tracked the events from Portland City, Oregon, in the United States, expressing delight at the massive crowds gathered by the movement, which Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna leads.
“I was following what was happening earlier in the day on Sunday. Oh, things are very good. Things are boiling very nicely,” Gachagua said during an interdenominational fellowship.
Linda Mwananchi’s inaugural Nairobi rally drew vast crowds, bringing portions of the capital to a halt as a massive leaders’ convoy wound its way from the Central Business District to the Jacaranda Grounds in Eastlands.
The leaders began the day with a Sunday service at Holy Family Basilica before marching through Marikiti market, Gikomba, Burma, Jogoo Road, Manyanja Road, and B Centre, eventually assembling at a packed Jacaranda Grounds.
Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, Vihiga Senator Godffrey Osotsi, and Siaya Governor James Orengo spearheaded the rally. The politicians declared that the strong turnout reflected widespread public demand for new leadership and reaffirmed their commitment to backing a single presidential candidate to challenge President William Ruto in 2027.
Gachagua commended organizers for assembling such a massive gathering while keeping the event peaceful and free of chaos.
“They had one of the biggest rallies ever done in the city of Nairobi, and I’m so happy because the city of Nairobi has 2.7 million voters. Between myself, my cousin Kalonzo Musyoka, Edwin Sifuna, and Babu Owino, Nairobi is locked,” he said.
Projecting that the united opposition could capture 2.5 million presidential votes in Nairobi, Gachagua dismissed President Ruto’s prospects in the capital.
“If William Ruto gets 10,000 votes, he will have prayed to God day and night. Nairobi is locked, and UDA and ODM will not get a single seat in the city of Nairobi,” he said.
He framed the Nairobi rally as part of a coordinated, nationwide push to consolidate opposition bases before formal discussions take place regarding who will head the coalition slate in 2027.
While Linda Mwananchi leaders rallied supporters in Nairobi, DCP representatives under Nyandarua Senator John Methu conducted outreach in Othaya and Mathioya in Murang’a. Meanwhile, parallel rallies led by Kalonzo Musyoka and Eugene Wamalwa in Tana River, as well as Peter Munya in Meru, pulled significant crowds.
“As they were doing that, my cousin Kalonzo Musyoka and Eugene Wamalwa were in Tana River — thousands of Kenyans shouting ‘wantam.'” My brother Peter Munya was in Meru with thousands again shouting “wantam,” so the whole country has decided,” he said.
Gachagua urged opposition figures to direct their energy toward grassroots engagement rather than premature negotiations over leadership. He noted that the coalition will meet next year to select a single flagbearer once the nationwide drive concludes.
“Don’t waste time in hotels asking who will lead Kenya; it’s a waste of time. First go and consolidate people against William Ruto. When we finish the consolidation next year, we sit down and ask, ‘All these people we have consolidated, who will lead them?’ What is being done today is what is important and what is urgent and what is difficult,” he said.
