KSh1.58M Salary at Centre of Fake Degree Case Against Ex-Machakos Chief Officer | BossNana International Radio

Former Machakos County Chief Officer Joseph Mutwiwa Munyao faces criminal charges following allegations that he used forged academic qualifications to land a high-ranking position within the devolved unit.

Detectives from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) arrested Munyao on Monday, August 31. He appeared before the Machakos Law Courts the following day, where he pleaded not guilty to all charges.

According to EACC findings, Munyao allegedly forged a 2004 Bachelor of Commerce degree certificate in Accounting from the University of Nairobi. Investigators also accuse him of falsifying a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) Final Examination Certificate dated June 2019.

Anti-graft officers claim Munyao presented both fraudulent documents to secure an appointment as Chief Officer for Industry and Innovation. He served in that capacity from January to November 2023, drawing a cumulative salary of Ksh.1,585,967.90.

Following thorough investigations, the EACC submitted the inquiry file to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), who authorized prosecution on charges of forgery of academic certificates, uttering a false document, and fraudulent acquisition of public property.

The court granted Munyao a cash bail of Ksh.1 million, offering an alternative bond of Ksh.2 million with a similar surety.

Beyond the criminal case, the EACC confirmed it will institute civil proceedings to recover all salaries and allowances paid to Munyao during his tenure. Munyao now awaits trial.
