Siaya Governor James Orengo has firmly pushed back against critics within the Linda Mwananchi movement who accuse him of undermining Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna’s presidential ambitions.
Addressing the rising tension within the opposition camp, Orengo insisted that the coalition must embrace internal democracy and allow open competition for its presidential ticket ahead of the 2027 General Election.
In an interview with Citizen TV, Orengo confirmed his intention to challenge Sifuna for the coalition’s top nomination. He scoffed at suggestions that his entry into the contest is designed to derail the Nairobi Senator’s bid or split the movement.
“I am going to run for president, which is not a crime,” Orengo stated. “In 2007 there was what was called the Pentagon within ODM. The five people who constituted the Pentagon were all presidential candidates.”
Dismissing allegations of sabotage, the veteran lawyer reaffirmed his commitment to maintaining a united front when the election rolls around.
“I am not spoiling it, because I am committed to having one presidential candidate,” he added. “Those who are raising these fears are not democrats.”
Friction Over Limuru Retreat Strategy
Orengo’s declaration comes after his refusal to endorse an early consensus on the ticket caused friction during a recent coalition retreat in Limuru, Kiambu County.
According to the governor, attempts by some principals to settle the flagbearer issue prematurely were ill-advised.
“The issue of a presidential candidate was brought up as an agenda, but I said it was inappropriate at that time and that it needed more consultation. Some people were unhappy about that,” Orengo revealed.
Opposition Camp Divided Over Flagbearer
Orengo’s stance has rattled several figures within Linda Mwananchi, many of whom view the presidential nomination as already settled.
During a major coalition rally in Meru County on Sunday, key leaders attempted to cement the question of who will lead the outfit into 2027. However, Orengo’s refusal to back down signals an impending nomination battle.
Having served as Siaya Governor since 2022, Orengo remains one of the longest-serving figures in Kenyan opposition politics. With a political career spanning back to the multi-party struggle of the 1990s, his insistence on a democratic contest sets the stage for a high-stakes showdown within the Linda Mwananchi ranks.
