UDA Plans Constitution Changes as Defections Shake Ruling Party | BossNana International Radio

The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) has announced plans to amend its party constitution amid growing political realignments and defections ahead of the 2027 General Election.

A Gazette Notice published on August 14 under the Political Parties Act (Cap 7D) officially opened the process, allowing members of the public to weigh in before any modifications take effect. The Registrar invoked Section 20(1)(a) of the Act, which empowers a political party to alter its founding constitution after notifying the public to trigger the proposed changes.

“IN EXERCISE of the powers conferred by Section 20(1) (a) of the Political Parties Act, the Registrar of Political Parties gives notice that United Democratic Alliance (UDA) intends to make changes to its party constitution,” the notice stated in part.

Members of the public who wish to raise concerns or lodge objections regarding the proposed amendments have seven days from the publication date until August 21 to submit written views to the Registrar’s office.

These planned structural changes coincide with major political shifts, including the recent alignment between UDA and ODM to form the Kenya Kwanza-ODM Alliance for the 2027 contest. During the Naivasha Broad-Based Parliamentary Group Meeting on August 11, both parties unanimously resolved to appoint five members from each side to draft a joint coalition manifesto.

The amendments also follow high-profile departures from the ruling coalition as the country approaches the 2027 polls. Leaders such as Gatundu South MP Gabriel Kagombe and former Gender Cabinet Secretary Aisha Jumwa have stepped away from the ruling party in recent weeks. Additionally, Governors Irungu Kang’ata of Murang’a and Kiarie Badilisha of Nyandarua have crossed over to Rigathi Gachagua’s Democracy for Citizens Party.
