Deputy President Kithure Kindiki urged retired President Uhuru Kenyatta to exit active politics and instead embrace the non-partisan role of an elder statesman.
Speaking on Saturday, August 22, during the Mt Kenya East Grassroots Leaders event at Kinoru Stadium in Meru Town, Kindiki stated that as Kenya’s only living retired head of state, Kenyatta holds a duty to offer unifying guidance above day-to-day political rivalries. He warned that partisan actors risk misusing the former president’s legacy to fuel political divisions.
“We are asking our retired president, Uhuru Kenyatta, to continue being a statesman who counsels the country because he is the only retired president. We don’t want him to be misused in politics that incite and divide the country,” Kindiki said.
Framing his appeal as a move to safeguard Kenyatta’s political legacy, Kindiki adopted a measured tone to emphasize the former president’s role as a unifying national figure.
“As a retired president, he should serve as our go-to leader who can help the country. We can’t afford him to be used by characters who want to push their partisan interests and tarnish his legacy,” he added.
Kindiki compared a retired head of state to a family patriarch tasked with watching over a household, arguing that the nation stands to gain far more from Kenyatta’s extensive governance experience if he remains entirely non-partisan.
“When you retire from work, that is a big honour. It is like being a family man who now watches over his family and children because he has a lot of experience,” Kindiki said.
