The government is accelerating the comprehensive overhaul of the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, as the country prepares to co-host major international football tournaments, including the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
In an official progress report, Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo stated that joint oversight by the Ministry of Defence and Sports Kenya is driving the rehabilitation forward to deliver a modern 60,000-seat facility aligned with FIFA and the Confederation of African Football (CAF) specifications.
“Built in 1987 under Kenya’s second president, Daniel arap Moi, the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, has for decades stood as one of the country’s most iconic sporting landmarks,” Omollo noted, pointing out that an expanding sports vision required upgrading the legacy infrastructure. He explained that while an initial phase of works targeted readiness for the 2025 African Nations Championship (CHAN), contractors have now advanced into a broader structural reconstruction.
“The current works, under the strict oversight of the Ministry of Defence and Sports Kenya, are being executed comprehensively to deliver a 60,000-seater facility that meets FIFA and CAF standards ahead of major international assignments, including the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON),” Omollo said.
Key structural upgrades underway at Kasarani include:

Playing Surface & Drainage: Construction crews have excavated the previous pitch and established a subterranean sub-base with geotextile filtration membranes and perforated drainage piping. Ground teams are preparing the foundation for a hybrid Bermuda-grass surface engineered for heavy rain conditions.

Spectator Facilities: A new spectator canopy is 99% complete. Contractors are replacing all standard seating while upgrading VIP and VVIP hospitality lounges.

Match-Day Technology: The stadium is receiving 2,000-lux floodlighting, animation screens, Video Assistant Referee (VAR) integration, and an automated ticketing system.

Player & Media Infrastructure: Upgrades extend to modern team changing rooms, enhanced media centers, and two fully rehabilitated training grounds within the complex.
The renovation forms part of Kenya’s broader sports infrastructure development alongside project works at Nyayo National Stadium and the new Raila Odinga International Stadium.
