The Nairobi County Assembly has allocated Ksh 20 million in its 2026/27 financial year budget to construct a monument and statue honoring the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
The allocation follows the adoption of the 40th Report of the Select Committee on County Finance, Budget and Appropriations regarding the 2026/27 Revenue and Expenditure Estimates. This budgetary provision fulfills a special motion approved by the Assembly, sponsored by Nairobi West MCA John Rex Omolleh (ODM), which sought a permanent monument to honor Odinga after his passing in October 2025.
Monument site moved from Uhuru Park
Following an amendment to Omolleh’s original proposal to place the structure in Uhuru Park, the monument will now stand at the Supreme Court Roundabout along City Hall Way.
Moving the motion, Omolleh highlighted Odinga’s decades of public service, sacrifice, and leadership in advancing Kenya’s democratic space and infrastructure, specifically noting his oversight of key road projects such as the Thika Superhighway, Eastern Bypass, and Southern Bypass during his tenure as Minister for Roads and Public Works.
“The late Raila Odinga deserves a special place in the annals of history as recognition for his outstanding sacrifice and service to the public,” Omolleh told the Assembly.
The budget approval allows the county executive to begin planning and execution in collaboration with national government agencies, creating a permanent public landmark to preserve the legacy of the prominent opposition leader, Cabinet Minister, and Prime Minister.
