The government has released the long-awaited Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) results for 2025 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) candidates, clearing the path for thousands of high school graduates to enter higher education.
Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba announced on Wednesday, July 8, that the agency successfully placed 293,869 students in various institutions for the upcoming academic cycle. This marks a massive leap from the historical average of roughly 70,000 annual placements, which dates back to the agency’s inception.
Where the Slots Went
The new numbers show that 202,133 applicants secured slots in degree programs, while another 28,246 won admission to the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC).
Additionally, 500 students secured slots in Diploma in Law (Paralegal) programs, while 765 and 875 applicants won admission to Kenya Utalii College and secondary Teacher Training College (TTC) programs, respectively.
For the first time, KUCCPS integrated Kenya Utalii College into its central placement system, giving applicants access to a broader selection of institutions.
Ogamba also revealed that 8,915 candidates who qualified for degree programs chose to pursue Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) courses instead, a sign of rising interest in practical, skills-based education.
To offer students more flexibility, the Education CS expanded the inter-institution transfer window. Instead of the typical 2-week timeline, students now have a full month to submit requests if they wish to change their assigned courses or institutions.
How to Check Placement Results
Applicants can find out where they have been placed by logging into their accounts on the official KUCCPS Student Portal. The system’s dashboard displays both the assigned university or college and the specific academic program the student will pursue.
To view results, students must input the following:
- Their KCSE index number
- The examination year (2025)
- Their password, which is either their birth certificate number or KCPE index number
Alternatively, applicants can send an SMS with their full index number (starting with their KCSE year, no spaces) to 20842.
Ogamba directed universities and colleges to immediately prepare and issue admission letters and joining instructions, saying timely distribution of these documents will facilitate a smooth transition into higher learning institutions.
“Following the conclusion of the placement, the Higher Education Financing portal is now open for first-time applicants,” Ogamba announced, allowing newly placed students to begin applying for government scholarships and loans.
The Numbers Behind the Placement
Ministry data shows that 980,535 candidates who sat the 2025 KCSE examination qualified to apply for placement. Among those, 270,508 applicants attained the minimum C+ grade required for university degree admission.
KUCCPS Chief Executive Officer Dr. Agnes Mercy Wahome noted that the placement exercise absorbed 81 percent of all students who scored a C+ or higher in the 2025 KCSE examination. However, she pointed out that application numbers continued to outstrip available capacity in highly competitive courses.
For instance, while 6,500 students applied for Bachelor of Medicine programmes, universities could accommodate only 702.
Financing the Next Step
Alongside the placement announcement, the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) opened applications for undergraduate subsequent loans to assist continuing students. First-time university and TVET students can also log into the Higher Education Financing portal to submit their requests for government scholarships and student upkeep loans.
