Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua has alleged that President William Ruto is driving a coordinated effort to politically isolate Deputy President Kithure Kindiki. Gachagua said Ruto is encouraging leaders within the Kenya Kwanza administration to publicly criticize Kindiki, aiming to leave him increasingly isolated within government.
Speaking during a media roundtable on Sunday, Gachagua claimed that Kindiki has chosen to endure the pressure in silence. He argued that the deputy president continues to face mounting political strain because of his role within the Kenya Kwanza administration.
“Our son from Tharaka is suffering. I know what he is going through because I went through the same. Being that I was elected, I was tough- headed; no one could insult me. Even Junet’s statements, it is Ruto who told them,” he claimed.
Gachagua added that Ruto is behind the pressure, saying, “Ruto is the one making him suffer; Ruto has told them until Kindiki gets angry and resigns.”
He said the alleged strategy is nothing new, arguing that he faced a similar pattern during his time as deputy president. Gachagua recalled a Kisumu event that President Ruto attended, where he alleged allied leaders publicly criticized him at the Head of State’s instruction.
Gachagua also defended Kindiki, arguing that the Deputy President could not publicly condemn Health Cabinet Secretary Duale’s remarks targeting the Kikuyu community while he remains part of the government. He criticized Duale, alleging that the Cabinet Secretary contributed about 7,000 votes to Ruto’s election. He said the Mount Kenya region delivered a large share of votes that helped secure the presidency.
The DCP leader argued that Duale holds his Cabinet role because of the support Ruto received from the region, and he questioned why the CS would allegedly describe members of the Kikuyu community as “hyenas.”
Gachagua stated that, had he still served as Deputy President, he would have pushed for Duale’s resignation. He said Duale’s remarks alone warranted dismissal from a government that he said relied heavily on the very people Duale allegedly insulted.
