President William Ruto says he has invited English Premier League champions Arsenal to visit Kenya after supporters in Nairobi marked the club’s title win with jubilant celebrations.
Ruto said he was struck by how large and enthusiastic the crowds were in the capital once Arsenal brought an end to their 22-year-old wait for a league trophy.
Speaking to Reuters at the G7 Summit in France, the president added that the energy he witnessed among Kenyan fans led him to consider bringing the North London club to the country next year. He said the celebrations made a lasting impression and that he has already sent an invitation.
“Arsenal finally closed the gap, and it was a huge celebration. I was shocked in Nairobi,” Ruto said.
“It was a big celebration, and I am trying to see whether sometime next year Arsenal can come to Kenya. I have sent an invitation because I think it would be a great moment for Arsenal to come to Kenya. They have great fans.”
After Arsenal’s EPL triumph, President William Ruto joined thousands of supporters in Kenya, celebrating alongside political leaders and other prominent figures who flooded social media with messages of congratulations.
In a post shared online, Ruto praised the club’s resilience, discipline, and consistency throughout the season.
“Our dreams may be deferred, but never extinguished. The journey may be long, but the destination doesn’t shift. Meaningful struggle will always be hard and important work, difficult.”
“But we are determined, dedicated and disciplined; therefore, our focus and consistency will take us to the finish line. To win, we must do our work and live our lives with the mentality of champions. Congratulations to the Arsenal, and thank you for exemplifying resilience and consistency. Let’s do it again soon,” he said.
Kenya boasts one of the largest Arsenal fan bases in Africa, and supporters regularly gather in major towns and cities to watch matches together.
Arsenal’s title win triggered celebrations across the country, as fans packed the streets, posted on social media and turned up at entertainment venues to mark the historic achievement.
