The United Alternative Government (UAG) demanded the immediate release of all agreements and protocols that the Kenya Kwanza administration signed regarding the country’s Ebola response. The group accused President William Ruto’s government of keeping information secret and acting dishonestly on an issue of serious national importance.
In a statement, the opposition coalition led by Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka also rejected the Finance Bill 2026 as it stands and said it will back one jointly supported candidate for the upcoming Ol Kalou parliamentary by-election.
The UAG criticized what it called a “regime of secrecy and confusion” around the ongoing Ebola controversy. It said public anger grew because the government failed to share information clearly.
“Instead of providing timely information, consulting stakeholders, and reassuring the public, this Ruto regime has chosen secrecy, half-truths, and arrogance,” the coalition said.
The opposition called for full disclosure of every agreement, protocol, and commitment tied to Ebola-related programmes and facilities. It argued that any arrangement involving one of the world’s deadliest infectious diseases must follow the highest standards of transparency and accountability.
The coalition also pointed to what it described as a serious contradiction in the government’s approach. It said the administration cannot equip public hospitals, ensure essential medicines, or fix a healthcare system under pressure, yet it asks Kenyans to put their trust in it without clear information on national biosecurity.
“Trust is the currency of leadership, and transparency is the foundation upon which that trust is built. This regime has failed both tests,” the statement read.
Finance Bill 2026
The coalition turned its attention to the Finance Bill 2026, warning that the proposed law proves the administration has “learnt nothing and forgotten everything” from the June 25, 2024, Gen Z-led uprising that nearly toppled the government.
The UAG accused the Ruto administration of recycling the same old financial strategy: raising taxes, borrowing more, and squeezing household incomes, while ignoring corruption, wasteful spending, and bloated procurement contracts.
“A government that has failed to curb corruption, eliminate waste, and deliver value for public expenditure has no moral authority to demand further sacrifices from citizens already struggling to make ends meet,” the statement read.
The coalition maintained that Kenyans want to contribute to nation-building, but they demand accountability and real value for their money.
“Kenya does not suffer from a shortage of revenue. Kenya suffers from a shortage of accountability, specifically Ruto’s accountability,” the statement added.
The Ol Kalou By-Election
Regarding the Ol Kalou by-election, the UAG announced an agreement to back a single candidate under its banner. To find the aspirant with the best chance of winning, the coalition will rely on an independent scientific survey and credible opinion polling.
The coalition called on the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), security agencies, and all political actors to guarantee a peaceful, free, fair, and transparent election.
Furthermore, the coalition warned against voter bribery, the abuse of public resources, voter intimidation, and the use of State machinery to tilt the election outcome.
“No Kenyan should be forced to choose between conscience and a handout, and no election should be won through intimidation, manipulation, or the purchase of votes,” the statement read.
A Crisis of Leadership
The UAG concluded that three major issues – the secrecy surrounding Ebola arrangements, the heavy taxes in the Finance Bill 2026, and the attempts to undermine democratic choice – all point to a crisis of leadership, missing accountability, and misplaced priorities.
“No government can command public confidence while withholding information from the very citizens it serves. No government can continue taxing its people into poverty while corruption, waste, and impunity remain unchecked. No government that fears free and fair elections can claim democratic legitimacy,” the statement read.
