The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) revoked the operating licence of Nicco Movers 1 Sacco with immediate effect. The move followed investigations into an incident that killed Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) student Eugene Mutuku.
In a statement released on Friday, NTSA said a detailed review of the Sacco’s safety practices and compliance record found serious problems in how it managed and operated its fleet.
“As part of the ongoing investigation into the unfortunate incident that claimed the life of Eugene Mutuku, a KMTC student, the Authority conducted a thorough assessment of the operator’s safety practices and compliance status,” NTSA said.
NTSA said its investigations found that the Sacco’s officials and management had lost control of how they ran their fleet. The authority added that the Sacco lacked adequate safety protocols and showed no clear efforts to address major safety concerns.
The Authority further stated that vehicles operating under the Sacco posed a serious risk and endangered other road users.
Based on these findings, NTSA revoked Nicco Movers 1 Sacco’s operator licence and ordered the immediate halt of all its transport operations.
The authority also directed law enforcement agencies to impound any Nicco Movers 1 Sacco vehicles that continued operating despite the revocation order.
“Law enforcement officers are required to impound any Nicco Movers 1 Sacco vehicles found operating contrary to the revocation,” NTSA said.
Mutuku, who was allegedly pushed out of a moving Nicco matatu on Thika Road, died from severe multiple body injuries and internal bleeding after falling.
Authorities conducted a post-mortem examination on the 19-year-old student on Monday at the Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH) mortuary.
NTSA later found the matatu abandoned in the Kariokor area of Nairobi, while the driver and conductor went missing.
