“Ruto Did It for Two Years”: Senator Methu Refuses to Quit UDA After DCP Appointment | BossNana International Radio

Outspoken Nyandarua Senator John Methu has addressed growing pressure to resign from the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) following his fresh appointment as the Secretary-General of the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP).

Speaking at the party headquarters following his appointment to replace Hezron Obaga on Monday, May 25, 2026, the senator told off UDA loyalists who argue that his high-profile new role legally requires him to quit his current sponsor party.

Methu dismissed those demands, stating that such interpretations are purely politically motivated and completely empty of legal precedent. He further argued that Kenyan political history is full of examples where leaders have held powerful positions across different political outfits while maintaining their original party affiliations, insisting he will not be intimidated into relinquishing his Senate seat.

The Nyandarua senator cited the historical example of President William Ruto, noting that he served as the UDA party leader-designate for about two years while simultaneously serving as Deputy President under the Jubilee Party. He suggested that because of this clear precedent, his current situation with DCP should not be treated any differently.

“I know people from UDA have started arguing that when I am secretary-general designate of a party, I am required to resign from my current party. Much as you want to give us advice, may I also remind you that it is part of history; William Ruto was the party leader designate of UDA for two years, yet he was elected Deputy President under the Jubilee Party,” Methu argued.

While unveiling him, DCP party leader Rigathi Gachagua acknowledged the legal delicate dance. He noted that since Methu holds his Senate seat courtesy of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party, and following strict advice from party lawyers, Methu will hold the Secretary-General position in an acting capacity until the decision is fully ratified.

Gachagua went on to state that the party plans to formally submit the paperwork to the Registrar of Political Parties in short order.

“John Methu is the designated secretary general of the DCP party; from today, he will be the DCP spokesman, and his name will soon be forwarded to the registrar of political parties for due confirmation,” Gachagua announced.
