The Orange Democratic Movement has fired the starting gun on its 2027 general election preparations, officially opening applications for members seeking the party’s nomination ticket across six key elective positions. The party is inviting aspirants for the presidency, governorships, senate seats, woman representative positions, member of parliament seats, and member of county assembly seats, covering the full breadth of Kenya’s elective landscape.
Emily Awita, chairperson of the National Elections Coordinating Committee (NECC), issued the formal notice on Monday, setting June 30, 2026, as the deadline for all submissions. A follow-up statement on Tuesday, May 12, confirmed the announcement and spelled out the legal basis for the early launch.
“Pursuant to Article 61(1) of the ODM Constitution, as read together with Rule 7(1) and Part VIII of the Party Elections and Nomination Rules, the National Elections Coordinating Committee (NECC) hereby invites applications from interested Party members seeking to contest in the 2027 General Elections on the ODM Party ticket,” the statement read.
By moving this early, ODM signals a clear intent to bring order and predictability to a nomination process that has historically been a flashpoint for internal disputes.
Once the application window closes on June 30, successful nominees will proceed to party primaries. The winners of those internal contests will then carry the ODM flag as the party’s official candidates in the 2027 general elections.
The Requirements: What Aspirants Must Bring
ODM has set a firm list of conditions that every aspirant must satisfy before the party considers their application. At the most basic level, candidates must be registered voters and hold life membership status within the party.
During the application process, aspirants must present a valid party membership certificate, a national ID card or passport, relevant academic credentials, a valid tax compliance certificate, and a certificate of good conduct. Each of these documents serves a gatekeeping function, and missing any one of them is enough to disqualify an application.
The party has also built in safeguards against opportunistic late joiners. To qualify, aspirants must have been active ODM members for at least six months before submitting their application, long enough for the party to confirm that all dues, subscriptions, and levies are fully settled.
No Party Hoppers Allowed
ODM has drawn a hard line on political floor-crossing. The nomination rules bar any individual who has shifted political allegiance within the three months leading up to the application window. The rule targets candidates who might seek to ride the ODM ticket after spending most of the cycle with a rival party, a practice that has caused friction in past election cycles.
Beyond ODM’s internal requirements, candidates must also satisfy the constitutional integrity and academic thresholds set for their specific seats, as well as the standards prescribed by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
How to Apply
The party has directed all interested members to submit their documentation through the official ODM online portal. Officials urged aspirants to complete and submit their applications well before the June 30 deadline to avoid technical delays that could cost them their shot at the 2027 polls.
Crucially, ODM is also encouraging members to verify their registration status immediately by dialing *483*036#. This step addresses one of the most persistent problems in Kenyan party nomination exercises: membership disputes and registration conflicts that surface at the last minute and end up derailing otherwise eligible candidates.
