Kindiki Promises Teachers Better Pay, More Promotions, and Improved SHA Health Coverage | BossNana International Radio

Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has announced that the government will promote 50,000 teachers in the upcoming financial year, backed by an improved budgetary allocation. Prof. Kindiki assured educators that the administration has actively factored their pleas into the 2026/27 budget, reflecting a strong commitment to enhancing teacher welfare.

In the coming budget, we have factored in the money for teachers’ promotions. The target was 25,000 teachers initially, but after further consultations with the unions, the government will now be promoting 50,000 teachers,” DP revealed.

The Deputy President shared the news on Saturday during a thanksgiving ceremony in Meru for Njira Muthomi, the newly elected KUPPET Meru Branch Executive Secretary. During the event, the DP regretted that career stagnation has trapped some of the beneficiaries in the exact same job group for over a decade.

“We are doing everything possible to improve teachers’ welfare through better terms of service and increasing their number to reduce the workload of the individual teacher,” he added.

Prof. Kindiki also assured educators that the government is actively resolving outstanding concerns to guarantee they receive comprehensive health coverage through the Social Health Authority (SHA).

“We need to improve the SHA packages for teachers. We will expedite resolution of issues raised by teachers to ensure their health is assured because it is paramount to have a healthy teacher,” he stated.

The Deputy President highlighted that the government fully recognizes the invaluable role educators play and will continue to implement policies that uplift their status in society.

“Teachers are the only people who spend most of their time thinking about the welfare of children of other people more than they think about their own. Because of this, we salute you because you are the best examples of sacrifice for others,” he added.

Beyond improving teacher welfare, the administration has invested heavily in education infrastructure to upgrade the learning environment for all students. The Deputy President revealed that the government achieved this milestone by aggressively expanding the education budget from 500 billion shillings in 2022 to 765 billion shillings for the upcoming financial year.

Major milestones achieved since 2022 include the recruitment of 100,000 teachers, with another 20,000 educators set to join the workforce in the coming weeks. Furthermore, the government has constructed 23,000 new classrooms and 1,600 science laboratories across the country. The state has also hired 3,300 tutors for Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions while implementing strategic reforms that have successfully driven higher student enrollment.

Finally, Prof. Kindiki announced that the government is actively evaluating proposals to grant Junior Secondary Schools (JSS) independent management structures.

“We have heard your requests to make JSS autonomous. We are going to discuss with various stakeholders to see what we can do as we wait for parliamentary intervention,” he announced.
