Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua is taking his fundraising campaign international. Speaking at a press briefing in Nairobi on Tuesday, Gachagua announced plans to travel to the United Kingdom and the United States to mobilize financial support for the Democracy for Citizens Party ahead of the 2027 general election.
The overseas push comes as the party stares down a hefty electoral bill. Gachagua revealed that the DCP’s national elections board has projected the cost of the nomination exercise alone at approximately Ksh.2 billion.
The former deputy president told party members that internal nomination fees should cover roughly half of that amount, leaving a Ksh.1 billion gap that he personally intends to fill through foreign trips and local fundraising drives.
“I have looked at your budget, and the whole election process is about Ksh. 2 billion. From the nomination fees, we’ll be able to raise Ksh.1 billion, and the party will look for another Ksh.1 billion,” he said.
Gachagua is wasting no time. He confirmed he departs for the United Kingdom this Friday night, with a follow-up trip to the United States planned shortly after his return. The Kenyan diaspora, he made clear, sits at the center of his strategy to bridge the funding gap and build the international support networks the party needs going into a fiercely contested election cycle.
“That is why I will leave for the United Kingdom on Friday night. After I return, I will travel to the United States to speak with our friends and partners. We must raise enough resources for the elections because failure is not an option,” he added.
The announcement signals a new and more aggressive phase in DCP’s 2027 election preparations. With Gachagua personally leading the charge abroad, the party is betting that diaspora goodwill and international partnerships can translate into the financial firepower needed to compete at the national level against powerhouses like UDA and ODM.
